The Des Moines Register serves as the metro area's main daily newspaper. It is owned by Gannett, which also owns the Record-Herald and Indianola Tribune and the Altoona Herald-Mitchellville Index

Business Publications Corporation of Des Moines owns and operates Cityview and the Des Moines Business Record. Cityview is a free-distribution alternative weekly. It was started in the mid-1990's.

The Press-Citizen/Shopper group has recently expanded its range of weekly suburban and neighborhood newspapers. They are distributed along with shopper-style papers.
