KDPS (88.1 FM) is owned and operated by the Des Moines Public Schools. Their studios are at the Central Campus facility at Grand Avenue and Fleur Drive in Des Moines.
KWDM (88.7 FM) is broadcast from Valley High School in West Des Moines. It is owned and operated by the West Des Moines Community School District, but is run entirely by students with the help of a faculty advisor.
Iowa State University in Ames owns and operates the two WOI signals (640 AM and 90.1 FM). Both are affiliates of National Public Radio.
Clear Channel Communications owns four radio stations in Des Moines: WHO (1040 AM), KMXD (100.3 FM), KLYF (106.3 FM) and KKDM (107.5 FM). These four stations have their studios at 1801 Grand Avenue, on the western edge of downtown Des Moines.
WHO is a 50,000-watt Class I-A "clear channel" station. This is the FCC's highest authorization for any AM station in the U.S. WHO went on the air in the 1920's in a cooperative arrangement with WOC in Davenport, Iowa. It remained under the ownership of the Palmer family until the late 1990's, when it was purchased by Jacor Communications, which later merged with Clear Channel. At night, WHO's signal reaches from the East Coast to the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains, over more than 30 states.
